OK so I'm going against the trend but I'd like any suggestions for alternatives to BT45's for my 600S. I've run them for just over a year on the Divvy and 7 months on my GS500 and I do agree that they're fine tyres. The only trouble is that I'm not entirely happy with the mileage I've got out of them: the first rear was totally shot (<1mm tread on the centre-line) at 6000 miles and the second's squared off with about 3mm tread left at only 3500 miles.
Has anybody got any suggestions for a tyre that won't cost a fortune and will get better mileage than the BT45's on motorway-like riding? I'm tempted to think about Pirelli MT75's because of the cost but I suspect I won't get the mileage out of them.
Failing that, has anybody got any useful suggestions for increasing tyre life other than 'go on a diet you fat bloater' and 'don't gun it so much, you speed freak'?

Well, I got an MT75 on my front, that came with the bike... its had 2 mm of tread on it since then and it hasnt moved down any at all.... still has about 1.99 mm on it now, it is VERY durable, but I personally dont like it in the wet at all.... it doesnt feel as soft and grippy at the BT BUT it is a harder compound....
not sure, it seems to be, compramise the grip for durability on the Mt's and see if you can manage it in the wet. If you are an 'enthusiastic' rider, you will cakc yaself in the wet... must be about 75% reduction in 'making progress' particularly on bends and some road types....
Let me know what you choose?? Will need to do my front again soon....

Go for Avons Mate - they go on for ever and the grip is fairly good (from memory of me wobbling round bends on my 600)
I seem to remember getting 12k miles of commuting from my rear before it squared off (wait for the barricking to start about riding like a big girls blouse )
Someone has put them on recently; maybe Tigger on his 900 and poss John G on his 6 - I think they are cheaper than Bridgestones.

My Divvy 6 wears Avon HKMs they were bought last year from Busters....approx £85 per PAIR. They stick like **** to a blanket round the bends except the ones with a sprinkling of diesel on them..lol

Care to give a link to HKM's at that price?
I can't find em!
Can you compare them to BT45's?
From: TJ63 Sent: 7/1/2004
I had a look on Buster's myself, and they don't seem to be in the online catalogue. You'll probably have to ring and ask.
AM51 for the front, AM52 for the rear, and you know where to find the sizes!
As a comparison, they are currently doing the BT45s at £118.50 the pair.

Yeah. I've actually e-mailed half a dozen places for mail order prices of a number of manufacturer reccomended tyres and Busters just wrote back saying 'please phone' I'll guess I'll do that later today.
I've been asking for prices for:
Bridgestone BT45's
Avon AM51/AM52's
Pirelli MT75's
Continental TKV11/TKV12's
Metzeler ME330/ME550's
So far, bigbikebook.com are the only ones to reply with prices and they're quite steep!:
Bridgestone BT45 110/80 - 17 57H (front) 73.00
Bridgestone BT45 130/70 - 18 63H (rear) 74.00
pair 135 .00
Avon AM51 110/80-17 57H (front) 58.00
Avon AM52 130/70-18 63H (rear) 60.00
pair 105.00
Pirelli MT75 110/80-17TL 57H (front) 71.00
Pirelli MT75 130/70-18TL 63H (rear) 79.00
pair 140.00
Continental TKV11 110/80-17TL 57H (front) 78.00
Continental TKV12 130/70-18TL 63H (rear) 79.00
pair 145.00
Metzeler ME330 110/80-17TL 57H (front) 72.00
Metzeler ME550 130/70-18TL 63H (rear) 81.00
pair 140.00
Of course at least they responded.

Second try. Here's the prices I've come up with so far.

Even though I've got maybe 5,000 miles left on my front (and hence only really need a rear at the moment), the price for a pair of Avon's is looking tempting - even if it's just for the summertime. Still thinking though.

Hiya all Im back online now...been off for a few days whilst decorating being done in computer room.
Sorry I cant give you a link about the HKMs, as I said they were on bike when I bought it but it was my mate who fitted them. So far they hold the road real good and seem to be wearing quite well. I hope its biven you something to think about rather than go straight away for Bridgestones.
