key issue

hi all im new to the forum, just bought a yamaha xj600s 1992 j reg, 36k on clock, my problem is.... i was washing the bike today and as i was putting it back in the garage i turned the key fired up the bike and the key fell out, but the bike stayed on. it seems i can remove the key when its turned, it dosent lock in as it should. does anyone else have this problem? my worry is that it will fall out while im riding

could be that the barrel is worn or it has some cr@p in it. you could try squirting some wd40 in to flush it out. also if your worried about losing your key,why not try to make some sort of lanyard,bit of string tied to your bars with a clip on the other end to clip to your keys (but NOT a plastic clip).
