I'm in the process of checking & correcting the valve clearances on the older of my 2 600s.
Am I right in beleiving I should aim for the wider or the recommended tolerances as the gap tends to narrow over time?
Also, I've had a bit of trouble with the shims that were in the bike, 6 out of the 8 were unmarked and I have ended up swapping them with marked ones & remeasuring the gap so I can work out what shims I need, anyone else had this problem?

your correct doof, the gap gets smaller as they wear, but aim for them to be within tolerance, dont worry about them closing up, if checked as per the servicing, then they will be ok, your supposed to use a micrometer, to measure the shims, even though they should be marked

Thanks Ian, I don't have a micrometer, but do have 10 marked shims, so fitted the ones I thought would bring the clearances closest to the tolerances, remeasured from there and have swapped for correct sizes where I can. After a silly mistake calculating which shims to use, start again, oh well, no harm done, at least I measured the clearances again rather than just assume they were right. lol I still have other work to do to the bike as its been sat around doing nothing for a while, but wanted to get the valves done before I try starting it again. Have a feeling the green one is going to be as bad when I get around to doing it Thanks again Ian Doof
