My colleague has an XJ900. It started loosing power and running rough. The fault was down to air leaks in the carb inlet rubbers.
Apparently these are of composite construction with the engine block portion being aluminium and the carburettor portion being rubber. The rubber portion being moulded onto the aluminium portion. Genuine OE part replacement is around £100 ....4 being £400 obviously. Quite a kick. For £23 a set of four rubbers for a Honda CBR600F can do the job. They are 42mm Mikuni side and 40mm the other. The alloy inlet needs cleaning up to accept the short staight rubbers and eight suitable jubilee clips obtained. I have a good photo of these
but have not been able to work the 'Imgur thingy' and I'm not allowed to paste it here.

Carb issues as stated here before Triumph T140 v inlets fit use 7mm wide jubilee clips though, and also remove alloy ridge on stub. 38mm silicone pipe also works fine
