Just like to say hi to all on this forum. I've bought a divvy to sell on but there seems to be a TPS problem from what I gather. The bike on start up the revs go to 3000 then to 1000 then to zero. This cycle keeps repeating. I have tried the usual disconnected battery for 10 mins in the hope of a reset, no change. I have then put ignition on then disconnected TPS connection hoping the rev counter will go to 10000 to indicate diagnostic mode bit nothing.
My next step is to do some basic multimeter testing from and to the TPS and also check wires around the rev counter for signs of corrosion.
Any other suggestions will most welcome.
Stay safe
Jas

Hi Jas, I don't think you have put it in diagnostic mode with what you've done. The method is explained here; diversionclub.proboards.com/thread/3821See what you get when you follow that process exactly, & report back.

LoL
Right as per instructions
In ignition off disconnect TPS connection. The rev counter does not go to 10000 revs, it just goes to 3000 then to 0 every few seconds repeatedly.
I reconnect the TPS connector with the ignition still on still the same thing 3000 then back to 0
Fire her up then 3000 to idle then to 0 on loop
Thanks

Right, well, here goes ..... 3000 is the code for a TPS fault. Simple, yes? Well, probably! But before you ditch it & find a replacement, its worthwhile checking the wiring connections because I think it could be just wiring corrosion, rather than actually the TPS itself. The actual replacement new part is a bit pricey; www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xj600n-1996-4ke5-england-264ke-300e3_model38897/throttle-sensor-assy_4hd8588500/Fowlers in Bristol might be cheaper - so worth ringing & asking them. Though cheaper options exist on the likes of Ebay, new or used. The problem I have there is trusting that it is actually the right part, & working. TBH it could be worthwhile to buy complete secondhand carbs, if you rule out any simple wire corrosion & want to replace the TPS (checking that the carbs have the TPS still on them of course!) Like these, purely as examples, as cheaper may appear from time to time; www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-Xj600-Diversion-year-N-1996-Carbs/203297954801?hash=item2f55809bf1%3Ag%3A%7EfYAAOSw%7ESZgQ%7EEY&LH_ItemCondition=3000www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-XJ-600-S-DIVERSION-1991-1997-Carburetor-carbs/264909167476?hash=item3dadd11b74:g:eqoAAOSw10BfkeLa

Really appreciate the response, so I've bought a second hand TPS of ebay, checked connectivity on the connector seems OK. Will also check wiring at the rev counter side so let's see.
Thanks for your expertise.

M40man helped fix something and nothing has fallen off. Must be a first. Expertise and M40man in same sentence. How things have changed around here.
