Hi. Normally a battery would be removed for charging. However on the xj900S it is a real pain to remove the battery. I have run connectors from the battery to under the seat where I connect my charger for the winter without the faff of removing side panels etc. Can anyone enlighten me as to why this might be a bad idea ? Is it a fire risk or is there some other reason you should remove the battery completely ?

I do the same on my bikes. None have spontaneously combusted or suffered any other ill effects ( so far 😀!)

Not a bad idea at all. When you buy an optimate charger, they normally come with such a lead.
Adding a fuse to the battery end is a good idea

I think the reason for not charging on the vehicle goes back to the old days of lead/acid batteries which would give off gas when on charge. If a spark were created at the terminal(s) when the charging lead was disconnected it could ignite the gas - always turn off the mains before disconnecting. Even with a modern gell battery it's not a good idea to leave it constantly on charge unless you use an 'intelligent' charger which stops pushing pixies in when the battery is full. Old fashioned chargers, if left on too long can cause overheating and even buckling of the plates.

I don't have a garage, so our bikes have Oxford solar chargers on them whenever they're parked. Seem to keep them charged up well enough, although they are fairly new and the batteries are in good nick. Jools' did go flat last year before she realised there are two steering lock positions, one of which leaves a current flowing so that hazards can be used. She got alerts from Biketrac to tell her the battery was low and the ignition was on, and that was when I discovered the ignition positions. Mine's the same.

Thanks for the input. I use a trickle charger so should be okay.
