The unit itself is very simple to use and well worth the money. I have thrown it all kinds of woblers while out and about and it has very very quickly re rooted me.
10 out of 10 for price and quality.
Bellow is all the info needed to unlock the Aldi Medion 98600 Satnav and enable you to use the Windows CE operating system. I found this on a site and added the links needed and modded it a little for clarity.
First of all install Microsoft's ActivSync I got the latest version 3.8 from, just click on the Worldwide English and follow the instructions. Or you can use the one on the CD that comes in the box.
www.Microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync38.mspx
Once this is installed you can then hook up the Medion through the USB cable to your computer.
Do not connect the Medion to your computer before installing the ActiveSync software.
Now you will need a file called custom150e which you can get by clicking on the link bellow. Save the file and then unzip it into a folder I used one I made on the Desktop.
www.gpspassion.com/download/custom150e.zip
Now the next bit may seem frightening but it`s not that bad.
Read through the instructions as many times as it takes until you are clear in your mind what has got to be done.
If at any time ActicSync says that it may alter any of the files you are installing don`t worry just click OK as it is normal.
1 - Connect the Medion MD98600 to your PC via ActiveSync and click 'explore'
2 - Copy via active sync the file showtaskbar.exe to the windows/start-up directory.
After copying the file do a soft reset. (Reset your device using the stylus (unscrew the end of the stylus to reveal the reset pin! and poke it in the hole on the top of the Medion).
3. Copy 'regedit.exe' and paste into \Windows\StartUp.
4. Copy 'modified.reg' into the 'Medion' folder on the device
5. Soft Reset your device using the stylus
6. When the Medion reboots it will automatically launch Regedit. Click 'File | Import' and then locate the 'Medion' folder in the files and folders selection list and double click to open. You will see the 'modified.reg' file we copied in Step 4, double-click to import. Nothing new will show up on the screen but it has loaded. Then close Regedit
7. Locate regedit.exe in \Windows\StartUp. Cut this file and paste into \Windows\Programs .
8. Locate Setting.exe in the 'Medion' folder, right-click and select 'Create Shortcut'. Copy the 'Shortcut to Setting.exe' file that is created as a result and paste into \Windows\Desktop.
Repeat this process for 'MNAVDECE.exe' also located in the 'Medion' folder and 'MP3Player.exe' located in \Windows
Then locate 'showtaskbar.exe' in \Windows\Startup and Select “create shortcut” paste the shortcut to Showtaskbar.exe into \Windows\Desktop .
9. Finally, reset your device once more with the stylus and it will boot to the WinCE desktop with shortcuts to the 4 applications you had before. You should now see the WinCE taskbar and you will gain access to the standard WinCE apps. If at anytime you can`t see the Taskbar then double tap the shortcut to showtaskbar and the grey bar will appear.
Note = sometimes during soft reset the stylus calibration goes out of sync and it is difficult to access the correct programs – double click on the shortcut to settings and re-calibrate the stylus. However this didn`t happen to my unit.
To use your Medion as it was intended just switch it on and double tap the Icon Shortcut to mnavdce.exe and it will run the Satnav software as usual.
If you want to play movies you can download a file called tcpmp.setup.0.70.exe from
corecodec.org/frs/download.php/345/tcpmp.setup.0.70.exe
While the Medion is connected through ActivSync run the tcpmp.setup.0.70.exe on your computer, this will then through ActivSync install a movie player onto Medion. Now you can now play movies on the Medion.
I hope to find out what other programs will and won`t work on the Medion.
All of the above is reversible by doing a cold reset of the machine IE switching it of then back on by the on/off switch on the rear, the one you had to use in the first place to switch the unit on.
One thing I have come across while using other machines like this is an error popping up on the screen and saying IO read error, to clear this just do a soft reset. This was on machines that hadn`t been modded.

Paul,
Good job - comprehensive instructions. But just a couple of things. When I did this I seem to remember I had to download the Showtaskbar program as it's not part of WinCE? Also, as it's a very cut down version of WinCE, there are none of the standard MS applications that PDA users with WinCE get - not even a text editor. After spending a bit of time looking around for what I can run on the opened-up Medion, I have to say I don't think it's worth it - apart from space invaders!
Let us know if you find anything worthwhile.
Cheers
Robin

Stuart the reason I posted this was because the version your link points to dosn`t work on the new 96800.
You will notice that you now have to copy showtaskbar.exe first and 'regedit.exe' after the second reboot.
If you do it the other way around you just get a quick glimpse of the regedit screen as it goes through it on boot up.
Robin all the files you will need are in the zip file you have to down load in the first place.
The movie player works a treat.

Hi Guys,
Thought i would bump this after a year
Its a slow day so was playing with my 96800 and have succesfully got tomtom5 running on it
Still needs some more testing/fiddling to get it the way I want but it seems to work ok....
I used the instructions available at pocketgpsworld (i'll post the link if your interested...)

Good idea.
Something to bear in mind is to keep the battery charged if you don't use it for a while. When I found mine again after 'putting it somewhere safe' the battery was flat and on connecting up and turning on it did a re-install and I lost the changes.
