Hello folks , I'm New here and although not New to bikes am having trouble removing a couple of shims from my divvy 600 1997. I have the correct removal tool but every time I try to compress the bucket the tool seems to keep slipping off the bucket . Am I missing a trick here , can anyone give me a bit of advice on how to compress the bucket correctly ??, Whilst I've done shims before on other bikes for such a mechanically simple bike this is frustrating me. Can someone PLEASE give me their advice ?? I know I can take the cams out or at least loosen them to get at the shims but I assumed it would be a straightforward job using the compression tool , due to my inexperience with this model I'm struggling . ADVICE MOST WELCOME . Billy.

Hi and welcome to the site. I am assuming the 600 is similar to the 900. I have done this on my 900 a few times and it is fiddly. My first question is - is the tool you have a genuine Yamaha one? Cos I got very frustrated using a crappy copied tool. If your lifting tool is a Yamaha one, persevere and I am sure you will succeed. However, last time I did my valve clearences I used the plastic tie wrap method. Search Youtube for the details - it is very easy to do and makes that tool redundant. Some people say you risk bending the valve using this method, but it went smoothly for me. Whichever method you use, I'm sure you'll get it sorted. Atb

Thanks spike , Yep your spot on ,600 ,also got a copy tool got fed up and finally lifted the camshafts, never realised for such a mechanically simple bike what a faff it would be ending up removing both oil cooler and carbs !!!. Thanks mate Billy.
