I was wondering if there are any legal requirements either in the UK or Europe as to the need to have ECE 22-05 or ACU Gold Stickers on our crash helemts. My reason is quite simple, I am thinking of buying a lid the from the US which is a European fit but is DOT Standard (as that seems to be there most recognised accreditation over there). If I was wearing the lide either here or say in France would I be perfectly road legal ? The lid in question by the way is an X-Lite X1002. Thanks

Technically I think it would be illegal, but Having never known anyone check, except in the case of racing use, I would just buy anyway, just my opinion though

If it's not EC-approved, it ain't legal.... but like others have said, you'd be proper unlucky to get nicked for that. The ACU gold thing is meaningless these days - used to be a guarantee of quality ,but no more, alas. If you are buying from the states, see if it has Snell approval - this is the toughest testing in the world....

That looks very similar to my helmet. I'm sure mine is the classic X-100. Fantastic lid they are. Mine has both stickers on it. Perhaps it missed the sticker guy on the production line as he went to get the bacon sarnies in

I thought the gold acu stickers was only required if taking it on a track day!! thought it was something to do with safety issues, (ACU being a higher safety standard) like racetracks won't allow flips!

The lids used to actually be tested and approved by the ACU, and there were different levels. These days anyone can get ACU approval.A new anonymous testing system is currently being set up with ratings similar to the NCAP system: sharp.direct.gov.uk/
