Hi Guys I was getting no braking from my rear caliper on my XJ 900S so I took it off and gave it a clean and serviced it. Pistons are working fine and I put new brake pads (EBC) on the bike and set off to test them. I blip the throttle while on the drive to test the rear brake but it was very poor and did not stop the bike straight away. Anyway I took it for a run did about 3/4 miles and I was testing the back brake as I went along but it was still piss poor and it just seem ineffective. I checked the pads and the disc, both were very clean with no sign of anything that might contaminate the pads. Can anyone tell me is this normal, am I expecting to much, or is this how they normally work. Is there anything I could do to improve the rear brake. I have blue spots fazer calipers on the front and these work as very well. I would be gratefully for any advice or tips offered.
Thanks Irishkevin.

Have a quick look at the simple possibilities first before you look at the caliper and the pads - is there anything fouling in the mechanics of the brake pedal? so that the pressure of your foot is never reaching the master cylinder.
I found my back brake on my D600 fouled something after an adjustment, causing me to think that in the process I must have oiled the pads or something. When I identified the problem all I had to do was to grind a bit off the top end of the pedal lever and all was well.

Does it need bleeding (air in system) and how old is fluid in the system (water in fluid and it's not clear in colour), might be worth changing fluid and giving the system a good bleed and see how you get on then if there is nothing fouling the brake as in post above. On my 600 just changed the line put new fluid in and good bleed out of all air and its totally a different rear brake now.

Thanks Guys for getting back , I will look at the brake pedal and see if there are any issues, I will probabley adjust the pedal and see if it is any better. I think the changing the brake fluid is called for as it has not been changed recently.

New pads do need a little time to bed in and reach full effectiveness however if the fluid is old it should be replaced and bled.
