Hi there,
A quick question if I may. My 2001 xj900s has a seized clutch. I am looking at replacing the clutch but not sure if it is something that should be attempted by someone who has very little mechanical knowledge or experience. Is it difficult? Do I need any special tools? I'm keen to do it myself because I don't know how I'd get it to the bike repair shop otherwise!
Also any recommendations for best parts gratefully received.
thank you for reading
Dave

Before all else (IE spending any dosh on parts) is the symptom that if you engage a gear it leaps forwards & stalls? Maybe due to being standing, not running, for some time? Or is the symptom something else?

It is exactly as you describe it. It has been standing for a year or two and now if leaps forward and stalls. It has done that sporadically but this time it doesn't seem willing to budge. It was working fine when i mothballed it.

My black D9 was susceptible to that, after a 'rest period'. The solution for me was simply an oil change. (Freed the plates by holding on to the front brake at all costs, & knocking it into gear with fairly high revs. Once freed, then rode it for a bit to cycle the fresh oil around.) Might be worth you trying the same.
(If all else fails, then you can take the clutch apart & clean up the plates.)

I have had this problem a few times, most of the time it is fixed by simply warming the bike up with the clutch pulled in, and occasionally revving the bike whist holding the clutch in and stabbing on the back brake to shock it loose,
you could also try holding the clutch lever in with a cable tie, and leaving it a few days,
there is only one time that I have had to strip the clutch.

Thank you HRH. The clutch lever is cable tied now ready for the oil change on Sunday. I'll report back. Really appreciate everyone's help.
