Hey all, has anyone here had any experience of a 4 degree ignition advancer on the XJ9?

I've heard of them being used on Bandits and other Suzuki of the same vintage.
I'd be interested if anyone has used them on a diversion.

I've used them on other bikes, the most effective was on an RF600, transformed it! Fitted one to a mates XJR12 and he had a big smile on his face. I'm gunna go ahead and buy it on Friday, pay day, so I'll be able to give real feedback. The reason for my initial question was, I've read on the ignition advancers ebay listing that it improves MID TO TOP END, in my experience its more for low to mid range. Was hoping someone could confirm where it improves the most.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all. So I've had it fitted now for around a thousand miles and its well worth the £14 and half hours time to fit it. From 2k rpm upwards it just feels a lot happier, crisper. It seems to pull top gear stronger from lower down the rev range to. So far fuel economy is unaffected. All in all well worth doing, I recommend it all day long

Yeah fitting a doddle. Take off the laft hand side casing, undo the center bolt holding the rotor on, and simply replace it with the advanced one. The hardest part is getting that center bolt undone, get someone to stand on the back brake, of put something between the spokes in the rear wheel, get as big an extension as you have to hand on the spanner and slowly undo it. Or use a buzz gun like I did!
Its well worth doing.

it might be worth fitting some 'hotter' spark plugs although it might take a little research to work out which ones specifically... advancing the timing does give more power due to giving you a hotter bang, and a hotter bang means the difference between the volume of the uncombusted contents of the cylinder and the combustion products is greater (heat the gas up more, it expands more = more power) but this can melt standard plugs... (ruined a very expensive race engine in a 330 brake rs turbo this way when a plug melted and burned a hole straight through the top of a piston!!)
i don't suppose you did a before and after egt comparison?? if you haven't, maybe think about getting cheap non contact laser thermometer (about a fiver on the ebay) and restoring the original spark timing, get up to temp, take a reading off the headers, replace the timing advance and repeat... yes this is a very crude method but lets you know (roughly) if there is a massive difference in the before and after egt's...
of course if the headers have a visible dull red glow at night (as i found on my cbx 750 when the timing was way out) then you know things are way too hot!!

I've never had to change the plugs in the past when I've used them on the other bikes. But its always something I think about, having melted quite a few from my 2 stroke daze!! I've got a laser thermometer but never gave gas temp a 2nd thought, I normally just do a before and after plug colour check. Its only been advanced by 4 degree so I dont think its gunna be a problem Mate. Recently had a plug melt at Santa Pod, at the business end of the strip, looking back at the video of the run we saw a puff of smoke, got the endoscope out and the tip had melted on one of the pots, gutted as we had just qualified 3rd out of 37! On the plus side its an excuse to go a little larger on the bore, it'll be close to 700 cubic inch when we finish, which will be nice I once got the timing slightly out on an AJS I built from a box of bits and the exhaust got so hot the chrome plate fell off like tin foil!! I've found that cars and bikes with knock sensors benefit noticeably from posh petrol like Tesco Momentum or Shell Optimax.
A Divvie won't show that as it can't alter its spark timing. But advanced ignition with cheap petrol can cause pinking (aka knock) which will quickly burn pistons. It will be safer to use better petrol as it should avoid pre ignition. Knock is more likely in traffic in hot weather when air cooling is less good.
Sparking later avoids knock but puts more heat down the exhaust. Risks increased valve wear especially on air cooled engines.
Check the exhaust gas temperatures with both fuels and see what it shows.
