Hi,
Does anyone use the Garmin bike gps units?
I am planning a trip to Canada next year and to rent a gps with the bike will cost around 80quid. So thinking about buying one here (coz then i'll always have it...) and loading the Canada maps onto it.
How hard is that to do? looks like around 50quid for the canada maps? The hire places seem to use Zumo 550 - any opinions on them?
Or just use an app on the phone if i get lost :-)
Cheers

Hi. I use an ancient Garmin GPS which utilises Mapsource, which is the previous software to Basecamp. The system works for me, but folk say TomTom units are better, but I have no experience with them. Going back to Garmin, I think they offer free map upgrades now (they never used to) but I would check when buying, that the free mapping includes Canada. Sorry I cant be of more help. PS. If buying a bike specific GPS unit I would have thought price would be in excess of 200 sovs. Atb

If you are thinking of buying one in the UK - check Aldi - my local still has some of the Zumo 340lm for £199.
Your problem with the hire bike is the power connection and mounting. If these are already in place and your GPS is compatible with the mounting and lead, then you're okay but if not.....
Secondly - you'll need a bluetooth speaker for your helmet to hear the instructions at higher speeds

Cheers guys,
the hire companies seem to use zumo 550's so they must have power/mounts to go on them- thats why i was thinking about taking my own :-)
thinking about bluetooth comms for mrs a and i anyway.
i've used navfree before on my fon but had problems with it freezing-maybe time for a new fon.....

I've got a spare Garmin 550 unit along with bike mount. Now replaced with a 660. Full UK and Europe maps. If you are interested make me an offer.

Hiya Mac, Thanks for the offer, I am a while away yet from getting the unit. If you still have it later in the year I'll give you a shout but if you get another offer just go for it :-) Cheers Adrian
