Hi all, I am still getting a fair bit of noise from what I thought was the known clutch rattle so I have done the mod on the dowel and have no play there at all. This did make a small difference but not that much have also replaced the thrust bearing and washer, replaced plugs and balanced the carb's this again made a small difference but its still there. It does go when the clutch is pulled in and does go a bit more quieter when warmed up after 10 miles but if you stop cut engine for a few minutes and start back up its there as loud as when staring from cold. I was going to replace the clutch plates (friction & steel) and springs but the clutch seems to work fine as does the bike run fine but I don't think I can live with the noise at idle in neutral. So before I spend money on complete new clutch does any one think it will be plates etc or is it more likely to be play in the stater chain/starter clutch which would be full engine strip down and fair bit of cost. The bike as just gone past 16,000 miles so not much and have all mot's for mileage back to 2002 the bike is 1999, a fella I know as a D6 his as a lot more mileage than mine but no noise at all same goes for the D6 I used to have back in 2001. Any advice on this would be most welcome as I like the bike and would want to keep it but then again don't want to throw money at it if it's not going to solve it. I take it from looking around the D9 doesn't have the clutch rattle problems if I have to change bike.

My old one used to do that even after the mod. I never really got to the bottom of it although I suspected it was the drive to the oil pump. It seemed to have a bit of slop in the gears. It went for about 18000 miles after I did the mod until it put a con rod through the side of the engine.

Thanks crickleymal, when I did the mod I looked at the oil pump and not much play there that's why was thinking starter chain etc. hope mine don't suffer the same fate as yours did. Might have to think about changing it only had it since end of Feb so will lose money on it more than likely.

Daft question - are you absolutely sure the noise is coming from the clutch area? One of my D6's had what seemed like a rattle that was worse when cold, but it turned out to be a pinhole in the exhaust under the engine.

Hi bobh, the noise will go when clutch is pulled in and also gets a lot less to sometimes almost not there when fully warmed up after a run out on it. I checked out the exhaust and its sound no leek's anywhere on system, i would describe the noise to be a bit more like a knock than a rattle but not a definable knock like big end going or out like that. With screw driver to ear sound's that it's somewhere around clutch/drive train area. Will more than likely see how it goes over the summer as I say it does run fine and see if i can live with it. Thanks for your in put not a daft question at all, all suggestions are welcome it's just with noises you tend to get more and more paranoid with them might not be that bad to someone else.
