Just got myself a xj 600 (98,twin disc) with less than 12000 miles on it, i am having problems pushing bike backwards (parking on path) it also seems the brakes are binding on but when bike is on main stand i can turn both wheels, there is a little resistance but not too much, it pulls away nice but throttle off and it feels like its going to lock up,discs are not hot when i pull up,,,,

Make sure the pads are seated properly and not lose , nor the rear calipers is binding, they easily seize, one or both discs could be distorted but then it would stick revolving the discs forward but generally it is more difficult pushing bikes backward. The only other thing maybe if it has the dreaded compensator valve on the front brake, Ie it is one line down from the master cylinder through a valve with two lines running down to both calipers( I had problems with these devices on both my D900 and current XJ 600 but why that would affect the free movement unless you have activated the brake lever before pushing the bike backwards is beyond me, and maybe someone with more expertise will happen along and put you right.

Having reread your post, sounds like there is air in the system.

Air in the system,,i have been told the bleed nipples on xj calipers have a habbit of snapping,,,therefore the previous owner didnt fully bleed or was worried about snapping BNs.. thanks folks.

Hmmmm . . . .
If the brakes are binding enough to feel it when you throttle back then they would be hot when you pull up. Even a very very slight brake binding will give you a pretty warm disk after a mile or two.
As you have already found that not to be the case then it would have to be something else.
Also you say you can turn the wheels (presumably with no difficulty) when the bike is on the stand.

Hi and welcome. On the stand the wheels should move freely. When you say the discs are not hot, how far have you travelled? If the bike is ridden 2 or 3 hundred yards without using the brakes, the discs should be clap cold. If they are warm they will be binding which is a common problem. ATB & good luck
