I have seen oil temp gauges advertised which seem to work from a sender unit built into a replacement sump plug.
Has anyone got one fitted? I have to say the only worry I have when I am stuck in heavy traffic is the lack of cooling air over my 900's engine.
having said that how likely is the oil/engine to overheat and cause problems and at what temperature would that happen?

Never heard of anyone having oil temp issues with a D9, My advice is forget about it, it would be just another thing to worry about needlessly!

Never had a problem with the D9 engine over 40k miles, even after some long riding hours.
Continuing on from the OP's query, have thought about putting in an oil temperature thermostat in the cooler line to only allow oil through the oil cooler when hot enough. The intention is to help stop the build up of oil mayonnnaise - the oil temperature gauge reading would be used to set the oil thermostat to open at the appropriate temperature. What do you reckon?

The thermostat would need to bypass the cooler, not shut off the flow altogether, as that would starve the engine with probable dire consequences.
It might be easier just to blank off the oil cooler in the winter (as an engineer with an innate suspicion that if things can go wrong they will, I'd always go for the simple over the complicated solution).
