Hi just wondering if anyone who's done it would recommend looking at anything in particular while I have my 900's engine out (which it soon will be!), I think I read something somewhere about the starter chain tensioner giving rise to a bit of a rattle when cold if that's worth looking at (mine seemed to)? I'm not intending to do a full strip down I'm just intending to replace my gearbox due to loss of second gear but it seems wise to check things through while in there. Intending to check my valve clearances while its out of the frame too seeing as they haven't been touched in 70k miles (bike has done around 150k.)

At that mileage, I would consider a new cam chain and tensioner too

Had a look at the valve clearances today and seems a couple of them will need replacing with new shims, wondering if anyone has any 270 shims? I only need the two and could exchange for my 275s if they're needed or will happily pay! Seems to be the inlet valves which go out, all the exhaust valve clearances seemed well within spec. The shims seem very dear new!

Separated the crankcase halves today, had a look at things and a couple of bits look as if they may need attention but am unsure whether they pose a great problem. The chain to the oil pump to me looked pretty sloppy, I don't know how much play they're supposed to have but it was sort of hanging. The 'primary chain' to the starter motor also looked as if it had about an inch or so of play, neither of these chains seem to have tensioners so don't know whether the play is normal or not. If anyone can advise would love to hear! Camchain looked fine to me and tensioner appeared to be doing its job.
