Hi Everyone,
First time poster and long time lurker here.
I bought my '02 600 naked Diversion about three years ago as a work horse to get me to work every day (50 mile round trip). It has now covered 43,000 miles (20,000 of them by me).
In that time and it has never let me down and has been the best £800 I have ever spent. Not the fastest or flashiest of bikes but solid, dependable and good fun. It saves me an hour a day due to not sitting in a box in a traffic jam and can keep up with many bigger, newer bikes down the Bristol ring road.
It is our second Diversion, the first was a 1993 Diversion S owned by my girlfriend twenty years ago which was a great first bike and covered many happy miles. When I needed a cheap commuter (I also have a 1992 FJ1200 ABS in the garage which I have owned for twenty years) I looked no further than another XJ.
It has just developed an unusual problem which I cannot seem to diagnose for all my googing and searching skills so I hope you don't mind if I pick your collective brains. I am reasonably useful with a spanner but would like to not strip the whole bike down for what may be a simple to cure problem.
The gearbox and clutch appear to work completely normally (not the slickest of boxes but okay with a bit of technique) but an unusual fault has appeared which I would like to cure before I destroy the gearbox.
When riding up to a set of traffic lights say, I depress the clutch lever and snick the gearbox into first gear ready for the lights to change. It appears to go into gear okay as normal but when I let the clutch out and pull away, I get an almighty large grinding bang before the bike engages first gear (without further prodding of the gear lever) and I can pull away (even though the gear lever is fully pushed down and first gear appears to be engaged as normal). This happens everytime I pull away reasonably quickly in anything other than Honda Melody fashion.
I am not sure whether it is a cluch or gearbox issue and would appreciate some advice if possible.
Thank you in anticipation. Cheers, Andy
