Once again, days off between shifts mid-week allowed for a quick trip to the Dales to ride some un-mettled roads and camping stopover - this time at Kettlewell Camping. Nice facilities and £10 for the night with the bike.
Lunch break on the way to the Dales
Tent pitched at Kettlewell, I then went off to find some routes to ride.....
North of Kettlewell, the road from Hubberholme to Hawes:
Off this road is a Roman Road which runs north-east towards Bainbridge:
From there, Bainbridge, to Hawes then the A684 towards Garsdale Head and a right turn north on the B6259 towards Kirkby Stephen. Along this road, at a point where it crosses under the railway line lies Shaws Paddock/Place Farm - a farm where the next legal trail begins.
Funnily enough the start of the route isn't marked by one of these - the red arrows which signify "BOAT"s. This one was part way along the route.
Surprise find at the highest point of the trail.....
From there, I worked my way back towards Hawes and Hubberholme, riding some more untarmac'd roads and eventually down to Grassington to get some provisions for the morning as the Kettlewell village shop had closed at 5.15pm.
Following a good nights' kip, I was up early and rode some brilliant minor roads towards Arncliffe, on past Malham Tarn then to Malham Cove. I parked the bike up in the village and at the Old Barn Cafe, I had their "Old Barn Special" breakfast. Suitably refreshed and fed, I left as much of my kit as I could with the bike and pointed my Altbergs towards the Cove itself. It was a hot day........
Then back down towards the village and onwards to Settle for fuel.
At the petrol station in the town I met a couple of other riders - one on a rather trail worn Tenere, the other on a tastily converted and immaculate, red Moto Guzzi V7 Racer which was now a lurvely scrambler. We got chatting about trails and a few minutes later matey on the Tenere was leading me rather speedily along a local one - me with all my boxes and camping gear. Local knowledge is key to riding such roads in England, it's difficult to find them on maps.
A nice couple of days out.
