I was cleaning my Divvy 900 yesterday and found this spring on the top of the engine. I assume it is off the carbs ( I should try that, might lose some weight!) it has also lost a hook by the looks of it. Everything still seems to be working correctly so a couple of questions for my learned friends. 1. Where is it from and how vital is it (I was planning a run this weekend)? 2. If I order a replacement can it be fitted without taking the tank and air box off? Thanks in advance Brian

1. Don't know for sure but like you, I'd guess it's off the throttle mechanism. Is the twistgrip action very light ? Does it return correctly ? If so, no worries (Of course it may have broken and been replaced with the old one just left where it fell)
2. Unlikely
Someone who knows better will probably be along shortly

Thanks for your reply, everything feels the same, or not noticeably different anyway. I have decided to give the beast the exercise it so desperately needs anyway so am off this afternoon. Should do about 350 miles over today and tomorrow, I will put the spring in my tank bag and if I pass a Yamaha dealer will stop and ask.

It looks like a spring off the throttle, either off the throttle itself, or off the choke!
if it's off the throttle, then I would not worry short term, the D9 uses a cable both to open and to close the throttle, so it's not going to stick open,
if it's off the choke, then you just need to make sure the choke is off fully before you get to far, you can push the choke off by pushing the choke bar closed from the left of the bank of carbs!

That may make some sense re choke, I covered about 95 miles today and felt it wasn't running quite right for the last 20 or 30, it wasn't picking up quite so smoothly so maybe the mixture was a bit rich. I am visiting Flitwick Motorcycles in the morning and their Divvy guru will probably identify the spring easily. I will check the choke is off fully tomorrow once it has warmed up to see if running improves. on a more positive note it was absolutely wonderful to be back on the old girl, my face is aching from the constant grin

Yep, confirmed the spring was off the choke mechanism, new one ordered and will be posted to me soon. Unfortunately it's tank and airbox off to fit it so will not be filling up tomorrow before arriving home.

I keep reading the title and wondering if it's anything like the Arab Spring and are we going to see an uprising of the parentless?

I keep reading the title and wondering if it's anything like the Arab Spring and are we going to see an uprising of the parentless? Orphan springs are different as they seldom all pull in the same direction so any uprising will naturally be fragmented.

I thought it was just another one of those posh bottles of water at £1.50 a pop.
