Oil cooler

Recently took oil cooler off my XJ600S because of a leak, fitted a second hand one off ebay, ran bike up, all ok. took bike for a spin, 10 miles or so and then parked up at home ready for MOT.
Following day at test station, tester tells me I have a leak from oil cooler, only an advisory bike passed on everything else.
Took bike home a little angry that the cooler I had bought off ebay was duff, (advertised as all good).
Upon inspection the leak seemed to be coming from the right hand side off cooler by the connection to the oil pipe, fitted two new copper washers and thought that will sort that, after test ride I checked and I still had this slight leak, Furious by now, I took cooler off bike and took it for test at local Agents, they could not find a leak after testing it twice.
Bought four new copper washers, and to make sure I had got everything right on bike, I took fairing off so it was easy to get at every thing, refitted cooler, fitted pipes with new washers and tightened everything up. took bike out of shed, (before refitting faring) ran bike for a good 5 minutes, could not see a leak. Refit fairing and test ride 10 miles upon return still have oil leak.
Have taken RH side oil pipe off and fitted a fibre washer on cooler, tested again 5 miles, still have leak.

Has anyone ever had this problem? I can't see where this oil is coming from.

It's a common problem that should be well known to the ebay breaker. The oil cooler banjo bosses crack on both 600 and 900. You can be 100% careful to back hold the boss with a spanner but it will crack anyway.
Solution is -
1 join the pipe ends together with oil hose or scrap the oils cooler pick up under the filter
2 fit an aftermarket oil cooler, cut off the metal pipes 50mm above the filter and run new hoses all the way to the new cooler.
I did the latter with my 900 using ASH fluoro lined silicone hose and a PWR oil cooler.

Thanks for that, I suspected as much. I was going to take the oil cooler off today and blank off the ends with bolts and washers, as a temporary measure.
I take that the bike will run ok without the cooler? as previous models did not have one.
If it's ok to remove it completely and bike will run ok, I will go for that.

Update on Oil Cooler, it's in the bin, have removed from bike and looped pipes together.
took for test run 50 miles no leaks, I was worried about overheating but, it didn't seem to affect the bike running without, as the previous models up to 1997 didn't have one fitted I presume it's Ok.
If any one thinks I have made a mistake by doing this, please shout up.

I took the cooler off my '98N not so long back. No problems at all. If anything it seems to run a little better. I took mine off as part of a project to stop the oil turning into mayonnaise, along with all the usual breather mods. The old girl runs a treat. I have kept the cooler along with the hoses and the bit where they run from behind the oil filter. A shorter oil filter bolt cost £40 but it was worth it I feel. If anyone wants the cooler and associated bits they are available - £15 sound fair?

I'll have those bits off you if you like, I'm planning to put it back to original at some time, but need bike on road for nice weather, PM me with what you want with postage, or may be a meet if your not too far away.

I tried the 900 with the oil popes looped but suspect it ran hotter. It was winter and I had no temperature measure so went for that custom setup

I intend to put it all back to standard as soon as I get all the bits I need together.
