My third attempt to post this but seems to have timed out. Anyway I keep it short. I had this problem intermittently. ie tach needle would jump to 9000 rpm and back and bike wouldnt start. I could fix the problem for a while by pressing the loom in the area above the relays on the left side. I traced the problem to the black connector in this area. There are 3 connectors ( 1 black & 2 white) with multiple black wires coming from the loom. By jiggling individual wires and watching the tach needle(ignition on ) I could provoke the problem and isolate it to loose connections at the black connector. Cleaned and soldered the connection and problem solved. Note these connectors and wires do not appear on the wiring diagram. I assume they are extra power points for accessories and they are on all divies. I could post a picture of the offender if needed. Anyway ,hope this helps someone.

Here is a photo. Are these connectors found on all 900s ? The connector on the left was the problem.

Looks like ex-alarm gubbins to me.
