Hi all, thanks for letting me join your great forum.
I bought a 1995 XJ600S on sunday, for use as a winter hack, rather than my Triumph Daytona 675. The XJ600 has only just ticked over 3k miles! The first owner was the second owners brother, so it was, until I bought it, one family from new.
There is no service history, but it just passed an MOT with no advisories, before sale. The MOT shows in the last 7 years it has had 4 MOTs and done just 260 miles. I'll have done that in a week come Sunday! It was only £650 though, with a nearly new Givi topbox.
The seller said he changed the oil and filter himself 2 years ago, so thats something to do as soon as I find the time to get home to the workshop from uni. Other than that the tank is quite rusty inside - I think i'll take it off when I get home to my workshop, put a litre or two of fuel in and a handful of old nuts, and give it a shake up and flush out.
I've had a few problems so far, but it seems to be running better with some real use in the last few days. The previous owner was very lackadaisical about just twiddling the idle adjuster as you wish, and initially I was finding that it would idle okay cold, with choke, but when hot would idle at 4-5k rpm. I've got it almost right now, setting it when the bike is hot as you should I believe. It now idles about 1200-1500rpm but does fluctuate a fair bit. The choke is very sensitive when barely warm though, and I find at times it's just below 1k, or about 2k+ - hard to get anywhere between.
The main concern though is that its got some clutch rattle despite such low mileage! Noticeable in neutral, which goes when the clutch is disengaged. It's also very vibey and buzzy around 4-5k rpm, but keep it in a higher gear at around 3k rpm, or a lower gear at 5.5-6k+ rpm it's okay. Is this normal?
I guess I ought to change the oil, balance the carbs, and set the mixture up first, and then see how it is - hopefully the idle will improve, and vibes and rattle die down. If not, after that I guess I need to see if the carbs are a bit gummed up after a long layup, and inspect the clutch basket for wear, and the oil drive pin slack? Anything else?
Thanks in advance,
Matt.
