Hi Guys
Usually I carry an overjacket and the one I have has done me really well when used over my normal jacket. But, it's a faff to put on and I sweat a lot under it - but completely waterproof when used over my normal jacket.
I got caught out today in heavy rain and didn't have the overjacket on. My normal jacket leaked like a seive!
So, thinking about the NEC show I'm looking for a waterproof textile jacket. Is there really such a thing? Given pockets and vents there may not be such animal as a jacket that can be worn year-round that is truly 100% waterproof - unless you know different.
My trousers are expensive BMW ones and they held up really well but a jacket like them would be about £400 - 500 (eek)
Have any of you got a jacket you'd recommend??
Happy (and dry) riding.
David

Unless you spend lots I haven't found one. IXS used to be quite good but the last one I got wasn't. The Oxford Bonedry leaks, the cheap ones I got from Busters were less than useless. I'm resigned to using textile clothing with a waterproof jacket and trousers from Screwfix over the top.

Yes, having looked around I agree that nothing gets a decent write up until it's many ££££. I'm heading towards a BMW Tour Shell jacket. Extremely expensive but gets great reviews. I'll see what they are doing them for at the NEC show.
Thanks

You have two choices with textile kit: Cheap stuff - can be good, it's what most of us on a budget use. They rely on waterproof liners to keep you dry which means the fabric itself ends up soaked and heavy, the windchill can leave you feeling cold. Expensive stuff - uses goretex etc to line the exterior fabric. Don't get as heavy when wet, but they're not as breathable as they suggest. Plenty of good makes out there - Klim would be one to look at if you didn't want to be festooned with BMW badges. Their Badlands Pro in particular would be worth a look.

I spent a weekend riding in Wales in rain wearing an RST Paragon II jacket which I was very impressed with. I was kept warm and dry except around the cuffs and the collar where some gaps allowed the rain in. Not an expensive jacket either. I must caveat that I had treated the jacket with a waterproofing wax.

If, and it's a big ask, there is any HG stock left in the J&S stores, I use a HG sheltex hi-viz jacket for my blood bike duties. Often riding for 2-300 miles in a single shift in heavy rain. Thus far (14 months use) not a single drop has penetrated. The jackets were being retailed at £80 before the HG closure.

I will be in Spain a couple of times next year and am a bit wary of the Sheltex sweatiness! Still, worth a look and thanks for the suggestion. Appreciated.

Hi, bought a Hien Gerike hi viz textile jacket last year, (some have even complained about it being very bright!! ) have had a fair few soakings and have to say has always remained watertight, so far. was in the closing down sale though, supposed to retail around £280ish had an old buffalo jacket, that was excellent, but after 8 years finally gave up, hence the rash move to buy a new one !but buffalo have changed, it would seem... now trousers on the other hand... I always seem to get a damp patch round the clutch crutch, jurys still out if it's the trousers or me leaking current ones are Weise, kept me dry on that east sussex trek , more than can be said for me gloves

Finally went for a BMW Tourshell one.
Expensive but the dealer did a deal on it for me.
Why? Because I prefer the idea of the outer layer being waterproof rather than a separate inner membrane. Also, the inner quilted jacket can be worn as a fleece so no packing a bulky fleece when touring.
The cuffs easily go over gloves in really wet weather.
2 year guarantee
Well recommended on various sites.
Decent armour
A little hoodie thing that goes over your head to stop water running off your helmet and down your neck.
Time will tell but it's my Chissie pressie to myself!
Thanks for all the suggestions - appreciated and fully checked out I can assure you.
