I need to remove the remains of the gasket from the engine gear change cover, but the gasket is stuck hard in places.
Just wondering what methods/concoctions you've used to soften the gasket? Also thinking of using a plastic scraper from a body filler container to remove the gasket remains without scoring the soft ali or damaging any paintwork - is there a better tool/method to use?
TIA.

Soften it with WD40. Apply liberally, let it soak in, reapply then scrape carefully. This may need a few applications.

In the end, scraped the gasket off using a piece of copper - cut from a section of copper heating tube and banged flat - clamped in a cramp. Still had to be careful to prevent gouging the ali gasket surface. Also tried a plastic scraper - no good at all. Lost the sharp edge on the scraper quite quickly.

Just done mine.
I used a window/glass paint scraper. It's basically a bit like a razor blade in a plastic holder.
Magic, did it really well. I just had to be a little careful not to gouge the ali but the stuck-on gasket was removed very easily.

Some heat from a hot air gun can help.
