If I wanted to replace the right crankcase cover do I need to drop the oil etc first?
The one I have is looking pretty battered and manky and I sourced a replacement from ebay which is much prettier.
Cheers.

Depends on how far you can tilt the bike over! There are people who claim you can get at the clutch on the side stand without losing a drop of oil, but when I tried it I ended up with a small puddle!

You'll lose some oil. Why not wait till you change the oil anyway?

Looks like a D9 cover, so no need to drop the oil - go ahead and bling it . Nice cover BTW.

Yer, its a D9, so I can just whip off the old one and pop this one on?

Yer, its a D9, so I can just whip off the old one and pop this one on? Yes. I removed both covers some time ago and no gaskets were present under either cover (see here to confirm). Besides, you'll have the bike on its side stand so any oil will end up on the opposite side of the bike from the cover.
