Hi all,
Just wondering what alternatives there are (if any) to chain lube, i have been told that B&Q home brand chainsaw oil works well in scottoiler's, but i don't have one so bang goes that idea.
Cheers Chris

Cheers Chris I just use a half inch paintbrush and some engine oil, when I am touring I keep a small bottle of oil and brush in a zip lock bag, if you do it daily, the chain lasts ages, my FZ6 which had a loobman fitted that I never used, in 9k miles, I never needed to adjust the chain once!

I use engine oil in a bottle with a nozzle, trickle the oil onto the outer bits of the chain. I have also used Triflow which is a silicone/ptfe compound and smells like pear drops. It seems to work very well.

I used cheap chainsaw oil in the Lubeman that I fitted to the Ténéré. The chain was still good at nearly 10,000 miles when I sold the bike, and big singles do knock hell out of the final drive - it got through 2 sets of cush drive rubbers in that time.
I have another Lubeman ready to fit to the MT-03 that replaced it, but I've only had the bike 2 1/2 years so haven't got around to it yet. Meanwhile it just gets copious amounts of cheap engine oil from an oilcan. Still OK at 12,000 miles, though it will probably need a new one in the next 5,000.

I have a sneaky suspicion that Scottoiler oil is just automatic transmission fluid in a fancy bottle.

I've been using some gear & chain oil that I found in the garage when we moved in 4 yrs ago. It's in a pressurized can & can be a bit messy. Found little & often to be best policy but the chain is now looking very gunky. Got a few jobs to do on the bike over winter, brake lines, hugger (or something), clean shock, grease swing arm bearings etc, so will take chain off and pop it into degreaser bath at work for a good clean.
