Just went out for a ride, like you do, and found some great roads all local to me (Kendal), route as follows:-
Left Kendal on the A6 north over Shap to Penrith
A686 to Alston, with a stop for a tasty sausage bap and a mug of tea at Hartside Top cafe (the highest cafe in England, alledgedly, at 1900 feet, and a fantastic view out over the Eden valley to the Cumbrian fells and the Solway).
Turn right in Alston on the B6277 to Middleton in Teesdale (a beautiful place that I've never been to before, despite it being right on my doorstep)
Turn right onto the B6276 to Brough
Turn left in Brough onto the A685 under the A66 and carry on through Kirkby Stephen and Tebay back to Kendal.
Some great riding, from the fast sweeping road over Shap, to the twisty climb over Hartside Pass, the open sweeping moorland roads through to Brough, with fantastic scenery and very little traffic.
120 miles round trip and enjoyed every second of it (even with assorted wildlife trying to throw itself at the bike - rabbits, pheasants, grouse, even came across a recently demised deer accompanied by bits of car bodywork still in the road!)
All this fantastic riding is right there in my back yard - I don't know why I haven't been out every day! Those of you who know these roads will understand, the rest probably think I'm just wittering (for which I apologise), but if you are ever up this way and want somewhere great to ride, try this route. I might go and ride it the other way round tomorrow (thats in the opposite direction, not facing the back of the bike) 'cos it will be a totally different ride, but probably just as good.
