Ok typical Rookie question... What is the normal revs for 100 km/h in top on a 600... my bike seems to have the revs very high... 100km/h (62mph)= 5000revs/min ...sounds like she's screaming at that speed... is this normal? ok so the 4to1 exhaust was kinda doctored by prev owner so the noise maybe normal... but 5000revs??? that would mean she would be in the red by 180 km/h (112mph) could that be correct? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png)

Carrots, Sounds about right,
My 600 does about 56-58 mph at 4000 revs. I know this cos it vibrates at 4000 revs,
If you think it's too high you can alter sprockets to give you less revs but I guess that will alter acceleration.

Thanks for the info swerve...
Yeah really sounds like someone has doctored the sprockets ... your revs at 100 km/h would only be around 4350... So me thinks it be time to changa da sprockets and chain!

Carrots, Somewhere you will find how many teeth should be on the sprockets, 16 front 48 rear comes to mind, count the ones on yours they maybe different.
I think the wonderful Doofer knows all about that!

Mmmm, quite interesting this. My 600S at 5000rpm shows 67 mph on the clock. This equates to (an indicated) 80 mph at 6000 revs which is my normal cruising speed over here. Even 2 up - heavily overloaded with gear - when we cover the 880 km trip up to Bilbao to catch the ferry, we stick at that pace. Comfortable for us and the engine sounds comfortable as well.

My gixxer was only just moving at 5k.... power doesn't come in til 8K.Rev counter doesn't starts at 3k...

yea, that rpm to mph sounds about right. I travelled to Scotland On my 600 last year, cruising 80/ 85mph, no real problem, engine sounds sweet, consumption still 55mpg.
The 600 can get a move on, try taking them over the 7000rpm, they really start 'moving'
indicated top speed 'i believe' is 120mph !
The sprockets may not have been altered, 48 tooth rear is standard, and your speed /revs sounds standard to me. There are some members have fitted rear sprockets with fewer teeth, which increases acceleration, and revs, but lowers top end..

My 600 does the same ie. 6000 revs = 80mph

From memory, I think that's right. 80mph = 6000rpm.

This IS my first ride! But the noise on my bike is just a little over the threshold to be comfortable for cruising (80-85mph)... The 4-in-1 exhaust was definitely doctored by the previous owner. The rear sprocket is not the original and I am getting 6400 revs at 80mph so I reckon the guy put an extra tooth on the back. So either I change the sprockets or re modify the exhaust, or more likely both. Anyway thanks for all the replies guys.

On that point... Dont waste money on custom fit ear plugs - they dont work on wind noise. I use Moldex. Very comfy and cut out 90% of the noise. Only snag - I can't hear a thing when wearing them. But better than hearing damage.

If you are quite new to bikes then they do seem awfully high reveing especially if you are used to a car.
Not certain what the actual revs are but I do know that if you put on a bigger back soprocket with an extra tooth it INCREASES revs for the same speed and produces more acceleration. A smaller front sprocket does the same and this is what I have done.
Top speed is a number, acceleration is a feeling!

Sounds good to me. I regulary travel at 60mph at 5000 revs. Rogers right though, push her through the 7000 barrier and she really howls. Cheers PBD

I used a rear sprocket two teeth under the standard with a standard front sprocket. This pulls the revs down about 1000rpm in top and makes for a more relaxed ride without sacrificing too much acceleration IMHO. Remember though that you need to shorten the chain ( 4 links for two teeth under and two links for one tooth under)
