I've just had to replace the flasher relay on my '93 XJ600S.
By accident, the one I got off ebay (FE246BH) was not a match to the original (FB249M), although it may be the one used from '96 onwards. The FE246BH did appear to be a lot more common.
The spec written on the side of the FE246BH differed only in that the original would take 27W bulbs but the new one only 21W and instead of three connections it only has two. The plug in the bike however did fit.
As the missing connection was for the earth (black wire) I cut it from the connector, stripped it out of the loom back as far as the 11-connector block behind the right hand rear panel, stripped the end and attached it to the battery's -ive terminal and all is working perfectly.
Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures. Yet.

An earth wire could be safely tied back with a zip tie.
