I found whilst removing the shims the perfect tool is a pair of tweezers! Generously borrowed off the wife but beware the almost nuclear type fallout after she finds out! That'll be my second near death experience in less than a week!!
Note to self: Ask permission next time

Other half will spot it from a mile away and immediately discard 'em in disgust...retrieve from bin and jobs a goodun.

I used a medium large flat screwdriver to hold the valve down and a magnet to pull the shim out. Small pointy pliers put it back but very fiddly.
