A question that seems to crop up fairly regularly from 600 owners is "My front brake calipers are seized up - are there any alternative ones I could fit?" We're talking the later, twin-disc model here, by the way. Certainly the favourite 900 upgrade, to blue spots, isn't possible because the mounting bolt centre distance on the 600 is smaller. To cut a long story short, I was toying with the idea of putting blue spots on my MT03. Not so much to improve the braking performance, which is very good, but the blue spots do seem to be a bit less prone to seizing than two-pot sliding calipers when used through the winter. I had been led to believe the MT03 has the same front end as the earlier FZ6, and because the later FZ6 switched to blue spots, I'd thought that the calipers might be a straight swap. Oh, no, the mounting bolts on the MT03 are on 82.5 mm centres, considerably less than blue spots. Which set me to wondering whether MT03 calipers might fit the Diversion 600. Possibly earlier FZ6 ones as well, if they are indeed the same - I wouldn't put it past Yamaha to try to use up their stocks of old FZ6 forks and two-pot calipers by putting them on the MT03, which came out round about the same time as the FZ6 was upgraded. So if someone with a twin-disc 600 would like to get a ruler out and measure the bolt centres, and if the answer is 82.5 mm, then it's probably worth investigating a bit further. Bob P.s. Neil - before you say it, I'm sure the answer is NOT 42.

I thought that the new D6 used the same calipers as the FZ6 mk1, but I also thought that they were 100mm centres just like blue spots! True, I forgot to mention the XJ6. But yes, that's what I thought too, hence the assumption that the MT03 would take blue spots. I really don't see why Yamaha would make up different fork bottom castings specially for the MT. Next time I go near a Yamaha dealer I'll take a tape measure with me and do a bit of crafty measuring up!

Bob Just measured the centres on the spare twin disc forks I have and they appear to be 82.5 centres Bob. What you gonna do now?

I would be tempted to get some 82.5 to 100mm carriers machined up if I knew someone with a milling machine!

What you gonna do now? As far as the MT is concerned, nothing. Like I said, the original two-pot sliding calipers are working fine at the moment, so I'll stick with them and give 'em a good clean when the salt clears in the spring. But if anyone wants to pursue these as a possible alternative for the 600 Diversion, I do have a brand-new MT one that I bought for a song on ebay. I might be persuaded to lend it to a trusted owner to see if it fits, possibly at the same time as they collect the air filter that didn't get handed over at the January Jolly. In case you're wondering why I only have one, the seller originally had both sides on ebay, with different end dates, but annoyingly they pulled the second one before I'd had a chance to bid on it. I did manage to get to measure a new-style XJ6 today, and that does have 82.5 centres as well, so those calipers are probably the same. Though I just had a quick look on ebay and people (mostly breakers) are asking silly money for XJ6 ones on there. FZ6 ones are not much less, but we haven't yet established whether those have the same bolt centres.
