I removed my centre stand to-day to examine for cracks etc. and reinforce if necessary. It looked OK. However, the pivot bolts were dry as were the holes in the stand despite regular oiling and also slightly oversized due to wear. In the past when this has happened I wrap a few turns of PTFE thread tape around the pivot bolt journels to increase the diameter. When the pivot bolts are refitted apply a smear of grease and you have a maintenance free bearing. There are two thicknesses of PTFE thread tape available use whichever is appropriate.---now got to get that *** spring on

Even if the stand seems to be OK reinforce it anyway with 25mm x 3mm steel. Its a carp design too weak and not properly thought by Mr Yamaha so it cracks and will keep failing even with well braced repairs. Even better make up a steel channel to weld over the stand legs from top to bottom and brace it across ways as well. Be careful to leave space for the spring movement.

Hi I could have braced the centre stand with thicker but heavier material. However, I was too concerned not to effect the "balance" and pivot point of the stand and have it bouncing against the spring tension-----perhaps I was over cautious

Pffftt - no need to spend money - get a handful of old washers from the garage and push them between the coils on both sides of the spring (or you'll end up with a banana). This lengthens the spring without any heaving and grunting (unless you are masochistic and enjoy that kind of thing) so you can fit it easily and then pull the washers out with pliers one at a time**, holding the spring in place. Mind your fingers! **In fact, IIRC, fit the spring to the stand in the up position, then when you push the stand down, the spring stretches and the washers may or may not fall out, but they'll certainly come out easily.

The spring is vicious - more than up to a well beefed up stand. In my case the welding slightly distorted the stand so it's action stiffened up nicely.
