Bought a can of of Castrol 10/40 for an oil change on the Fazer today. Halfords price was £35. And it was only 4 litres! They don't even give concessions for OAP's either. Could have got cheaper I know. Halfords own brand was £26, but I'm old skool and was always taught to buy the best oil and tyres 'you can afford'. Also know all the arguments about using cooking oil or whatever else is cheapest. But for peace of mind I always go for good oil. But £35 for 4 litres!!!

You'll give it indigestion feeding it rich stuff like that (remember who had it before).

If you care to look at the spec, Halfords own branded oil exceeds over most 'other' so called top branded oils.

Why spend all that money on so called top grade/make oil when the best thing you can do is simply change the oil more often. Cheap oil is not so far away from Branded stuff. If you keep any oil too long in your engine (car or bike) it'll get thinner and thinner and carry all the gunge around with it. As for price, well if you pay that you can guess why I'm stopping here........... ;D

The good news is it didn't cost you a penny. And I think my bike and I deserve it. The bad news is that you are satisfied using crap oil in your bike. To each his own

I found the 'blotter test' interesting as i have always taken a good look at the oil that I drop out of a 'new to me' engine. You can learn a lot from the look, smell and feel of dumped oil.
In this case the Fazer's oil was not very old, it still had that slight redness about it that indicates a recent oil change. Shell?

I feed mine on theirs, and one can I used was red stuff. Bnggered if I can remember which one. Unless Bev's got the right idea, but if its red I'd have thought more likely its from an Indian takeaway.

I had some Castrol 10w40 semi synth scooter oil which was red. I'm not proud - it was JASO MA so went into the D9.

I am naive enough to believe the reddish tinge came from recent Shell Advance. But the oil did have a decidedly Tomato Ketchup smell to it.
