I'm a real gadget freak so in an idle moment decided I would fit a rear view camera to the old XJ. I bought both the camera and a monitor off evilbay. To keep it neat I mounted the camera in the tail light lens and the monitor mag mounts to the clock surrounds. The monitor does obscure the clocks a little but the important speed/rev ranges are still visible. The power and video leads on the monitor connect to 2 phono sockets that I've fitted into one of the plastic covers that sit between the tank and the frame by the forks. You can unplug and remove the monitor in 5 seconds. It works very well and no blind spots! It also draws a lot of interest from other bikers who pull up behind me in traffic, you can see them pointing and discussing the camera lens with their pillions or other riders. The whole thing switches on/off with the lights. The camera has infra red for night vision and is obviously excellent at maximising available light as in dusk conditions you can see far more in the monitor than the mirrors. The bikes in storage at the mo but I'll upload detailed photos within the week. I wouldn't recommend it as a complete replacement for mirrors but it's a worthwhile addition. Attachments:

Hi Guys, Glad to know you! I'm in Rugeley, Staffs and no, I don't have sister called Pearl! (Great song though!) I ought to explain that the XJ was a 50th birthday present from my bro , he just turned up on it on the day, I was literally gobsmacked as I hadn't owned a bike in 20 years! Not sure the wife was too impressed with him though.... The bikes a strange colour, it looks black til the sun hits it then its a dark aubergine colour with a green metallic fleck - sounds awful but actually it's really nice! I work in Wolverhampton and once this cr*p weather abates I'll be using the bike to commute the 16 miles. Seriously thinking of buying a Caberg Konda Hi Viz helmet for safety reasons although I think the only real way to be safe is to pay a man to walk in front with a red flag! Dave

Myopic drivers wont see a dayglo helmet amongst all the marker lamps many cars have these days. Get a nice looking helmet and fit some LED lamps to the fairing front, so along with the headlight you get that easy to see triangle. I would post pix of my bike with its LEDs but photobucket is seriously crawling along. Its lately become pretty carp to be honest. Edit: Here it is - Without and with the lights More white than the headlight but not dazzling

A few pics as promised. Camera central in the rear lens and monitor mag mounted to the clocks. You'll note that I have daytime lights strapped to the indicator stems and additional LED strips on the number plate that work with the brakes. ;D Attachments:

Ah, another biker who shares my common-sense approach to motoring ;D As a family we can't justify a Yeti nor a Superb Estate so a Bertie will suffice for now - a car is a box, so what better box to have eh? A bike is by far the coolest, best way to travel, so, Solidarity brother! Unfortunately, unlike yourself, I don't consider myself a gadget freak ;D

Yep a Bertie is a practical family vehicle alright. I used to do some singing with a blues band (hence the Monica) and needed to get a PA around. Also we rediscovered camping last year and it's a superb load lugger, I have a roof bag and also a clever device (another gadget!) that locks on the towball with a platform that carries the tent etc. People may sneer (I've even heard them refer to it as the "Spaccawagon") but it's nice to see the look on their faces when we pack our camping gear with ease and they're struggling to fit their gear in around the kids on the back seat of their less capacious vehicles!
