I think I would check the clutch operation first.

It's probably the release bearing stopping the clutch opening. They don't get much lubrication. While cover is off check the operating shaft bearing. Seals fail and let water in. Replace with new parts and grease with high temperture stuff.

A thrust washer on both sides of the needle bearing allows a chewed clutch cover to be used. Use high temperature grease.

I had a problem changing gears on my 600 divvy many years ago. I rang my usual dealer and spoke to one of the mechanics there, who told me that the symptoms sounded as though the return spring was broken. He said that the spring was located just behind one of the crank case covers, so if I could get the bike to them he would take of the cover in the car park to confirm the diagnosis.
My symptoms sound different to yours though - I could select first whilst riding, but could not then change to any other gear. The problem was that the lever was not returning to the neutral position after changing - off the bike, I had no difficulty selecting all gears by hand. I just had to move the lever back to the mid-position between changes.
Perhaps your spring has got a bit tired, but not actually broken. Have you tried pushing it back to the mid position when you have difficulty changing? If that works, then I think that there is a good chance that a new spring will solve your problem.
