From: Stuart B Sent: 23/11/2002 Having been using the Haynes manual to diagnose a possible problem with the Carb Heaters on my Divvy 900 I contacted them in respect of the operation of the heaters and their test to see if the relay was working correctly. Here is their response: Thank you for your e-mail concerning the carburettor heater operation on the XJ900S Diversion. Having studied the system and spoken to Yamaha's technical division, it would appear that the carburettor heaters are only operational with the transmission in gear (subject to the thermoswitch) and are switched off in neutral to avoid overheating when stationary, such as when stuck in traffic. The relay is a NCC (normally closed contacts) type, with power being fed to the carburettor heater circuit in its normal state. The relay contacts open when the neutral switch closes. As you have already suspected, the relay test in step 5 of section 13 on page 3.15 is incorrect, and the relay should function the opposite of that described. We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused you and are grateful to you for bringing it to our attention. We will be making an amendment to the text procedure when the manual is reprinted.
