Corrosion Under Pad SpringsFrom: Muddy Rutter Sent: 18/04/2003 Hi All, I was changing the front pads on my 900S this morning and struggled to get the new ones to slide into position. After much deliberation I removed the squarish pad springs off the caliper and found an accumulation of die-cast metal rot under them. I carefully filed the area back to shiney metal and gave it a light coating of copper based grease before replacing the springs. The pads then slipped in treat. This may explain why I had uneven pad wear on one side, possible caused by one of the brake pads being jammed by the corrosion under a spring. Regards Nick

My tip for brake maintenance, is to take the caliper off. Ease the pistons out a fraction, spray them with brake cleaner, brush with an old toothbrush. (It might be the case that there is some corossion on the piston, this could be removed using Scotchbrite pad.) Apply a small amount of Red rubber grease to the O/D (Outside dIameter) of the pistons, and a small amount of copper grease to the front face that contacts the pads. Also apply copper grease to the sliding pins, & any anti rattle bits.
This red rubber grease does not damage rubber seals, which apparently copper grease can. I've done this to my BMW 1150 GS, & Honda CB-1 400.
This will greatly reduce the risk of them siezing up during winter.
Only had my 900 for 2 days, so haven't had a chance to strip them yet.

I must admit to be totally underwhelmed by the front brakes. Fortunately the back one is better than average.

My brakes work ok, but the back has lost most of its paint - on the outside. So who knows what its like inside.
