I noticed that one end can was blowing slightly at the join to the collector box. When I went to check/tighten it I saw that it didn’t have a gasket joint. The pinch bolt was tightened down as far as it would go but there was still discernable play on the end can.
I ordered up a full set of gaskets and seals but the ones for the down pipe/collector box and collector box/end cans, can’t fit. They are too big to fit inside (even if I could stretch the pipe!)
So what else can I do- I’ve heard that exhaust putty won’t seal on S/S and to try clear silicon, won’t this burn off or is there a specific seal/paste to use?
System is a Motad S/S
Thanks in advance
Tom

I had a new collector box fitted by my mechanic (Mansfield Motorcycles, Carter lane highly recommended - speak to Shane)and even he had a devil of a job getting the collector to silencer sealed properly - basically on and off 3 times. The gaskets did fit but he could not get he silencer tightened up enough so after plenty of chuffing and blinding, blood sweat and tears he gained a good seal but only with plenty of silicon sealant.....Anybody else got any tips???

I used exhaust bandage/tape (available for about £2 from most motor part shops). Worked a treat. It's quite messy (sticks to your fingers) but sets well once exhaust has been hot ... just don't rev it hard for the first 10 minutes.

exhust bandage has got me out the prevrbial quite a lot, when its wet ,it moulds to anyshape and takes up gaps on exhaust collars etc

Oh well took the time to polish them up and all nice a sparkly. Fitted the system back on this afternoon and sealed with "fire gum" M/C shop had never heard of silicon to seal exhausts!!
Anyway no signs of leaks so will tempt fate and head out for a wee ride later. Once Kids are in bed.

I fitted the stainless collector and front down-pipes leaving the cans off the bike. Tightened everything carefully and only one leak where I didn't notice a gasket had pushed in too far. Then the cans went on with a helper to hold then in line. I tightened up the clamps then slacked off a bit and refitted the can mounting bolts. Then tightened the can pipe clamps. No leaks no problems.
But a bent exhaust hanger frame lug could throw things out. I've had one bent inwards quite badly but thankfully easily pulled straight with a big adjustable spanner and the cracked paint touched up.
