Is there any way I can improve the lighting on my D9?. I don't know if any one else's bike has problems with very poor lighting on there D9 or is it just mine?. A mate told me about a article he read but can't remember much detail about it, he thought there was a replacement unit available that would offer a better solution, than a replacement bulb, he thought it was called a HHD or HID replacement unit or something like that. He did not know how much it would cost or if it was available for my bike or not. Can any of you guys out there shed any light on this. Advice & opinions please.
Cheers Phil

I did the upgrade with the HID kit. I'd seen it on the other Diversion site. www.bikersoracle.com/yamahadiversion/forum/showthread.php?t=712Despite the fact it gave a fantastic light output and completely changed my night riding habits I had some problems with mine. The first was getting the dip beam pattern low enough which i did do eventually. The second was because of the design of the lamp. To go from dip to main beam the light source moves backwards and forwards using a small electromagnet. Mine was ok to begin with but after a short period it would only stay on either dip or main beam. You could hear the light attempting to move but it wouldn't change. Edgyt100 (electrician) explained that on mine as the light got hotter the magnetic force required to move the light source became stronger. It would work ok when cold and just after it was turned on, but after a while the magnetic force wasn't enough to move the bulb from the position it was in after it had reached the critical temperature. I've changed back to +50%'ers for the time being, but i'm trying to sort out a permanent fix that includes HID. Rob.

I have inherited a couple of 110/130W "Rally Special" H4 bulbs. I'd be happy to lend one out to someone who's prepared to give it a try.

I'm seriously t'inkin about trying a HID Xenon kit in my D9 to brighten things up a lot. They don't draw as much current as normal halogen lamps and come with all the necessary wires, relay & balast for about £30 from HK on fleabay. Has anyone tried them with success yet? It is interesting to hear that there have been some heating up problems tho' as they're supposed to run cool. - Which was the supplier of the one that is giving the magnet problems - I could try another brand & then post comments.

I would like a pair of 50mm xenons to put under the fairing either side of the oil cooler, but they only seem to exist as fog lamps and I would want long range spots. Dipping spots would be even better, but I'm 99% sure they dont exist.

I'm toying with idea of HID. I also go on the UKGSers SITE, it seems that it depends on where you buy the HID kit from, you pays yer money and make the choice!

go for HID, but get it from a reputable supplier, buy a 50w h4-3, most are made in china and the quality can be variable, so you need some kind of backup, which you wont get if ordered from china, I have used these www.hid50.com/They have replace one failed ballast, the prices are usually for 2, but on a divvie you only need the one, keep a normal h4 bulb as spare, its quick to change back, i myself never use high beam, i have just set my low beam low enough not to dazzle, but on my Gs they are separate bulbs anyhow

Phil easy, you should get a loom, that connects to the battery and the old bulb connector plugs into, find somewhere to cable tie the ballast and the loose cables and then fit the bulb and the new conector from the loom onto the new HID bulb, adjust headlamp aim, dont buy one above 6000k and if there is a code discount box on the site type in "ukgser"

I've been trying to change the bulb in my D9.
I just can't get to it, now my hands ain't small but there must be an easier way than taking the fairing off.
Any ideas?

Mike I found it easier to take the tank off to gain access to the bulb , sounds a lot of trouble just to get at the bulb but it only takes about ten minutes. Remove front and rear bolts holding tank, 10mm and 12mm, iirc, turn fuel tap off and disconnect fuel pipe, (put a piece of old rag underneath you'll lose a drop of fuel from pipe), disconnect the fuel gauge wire, (usually a green connector under tank), and lift tank off. Be aware of the routing of the overflow pipe as you lift off. HTH Trev

Does anyone know of any small dipping spot lamps that could go under the fairing either side of the oil cooler? All I can find is lots of wide beam fog lamps and if looking VERY carefully long range spots, nothing that does both.

I like the idea of extra lights for when out and about on country lanes at night. Where would these fit and are they legal?
