Hi,
Off soon on a 2,500 mile Tour.
Question is do I replace worn front tyre, which has 2+mm tread on it at centre or do I hope it lasts & save new tyre for return?
Any advice?

My 900 had 2mm left down the middle when the shoulders were well stuffed. So I'd guess your tyre is soon due for changing.
I ride quickly but dont thrash around bends. I get narrow(ish) chicken strips, but my rear tyres alway square-off down the middle.
If you are going anywhere with half decent roads Id guess that 2mm won't be enough.

Unfortunately 1800 miles will be Motorway, with only 6-700 miles being on Runs with nice bendy bits.

Agree with CD - even if the bike's going to be upright most of the time, if the shoulders are feathered off it will handle like a pig and slide on greasy roads. So best to put a new one on.

Also a strong risk of it being illegal before you get home. If coming in from abroad, the VOSA wombles love to stop folks as they exit the ferry terminal and bikes are easy targets.
BTW Where are you going?

You could always finish it off on the motorways on the way down, & get it changed whilst away .

Hi,
I'm off to Austria for a week-end but have to get there & back.
Following CD? advice I have got one of those Maxis tyres, £48 off ebay & hope to get it fitted & scrubbed in before I go.
Probably best as weather looks to be on the change & CD's reports seem to suggest they equate well with Conti RA which it will replace.
Got a Avon Road Rider on the back which feels good wet or dry, but may change to a Maxis when it ears out, 5k so far & still looks newish.

Or, you could always nip up to that Northern town and pick that tyre up someone's been keeping an eye on for you

I know but sent him a PM & heard nothing so I thought he was off on one of his wanderings again.
When I get it I might keep it as an emergency spare.

Thanks but its not me saying anything about Maxxis tyres. I hear they are good but I've always had Conti's or Bridgestone.
