From: AL600 Sent: 05/09/2002 Just a quick point about welding arc(electric) welding is stronger than gas welding if you get your stand welded, better to get it arc welded and let it cool down slowly. Dont let the guy cool it down in water and give it back straight away, this could cause the weld to become brittle, a good arc weld can be as good as %90 of the metal origional strength!!! Then make sure the slag(oxide fom the flux) is removed from the weld ,and paint as soon as you can. From: T i m Sent: 05/09/2002 You can often make a 'neater' job with gas welding though can't you AL? I prefer MIG to std Arc ... it's easier for a start and often welds cooler than stick. Also, should you get something on the *inside* of the tubing (it is tubular isn't it?).. like pour in some paint through a hole and swill it about or use Waxoil to stop it rusting from the inside? Broken mainstands is something that mainly the BMW K series and others suffered with ;-( T i m
