I have a problem with a sticky ignition switch on my 2000 Fazer 600. The ignition switch is very hit and miss. Sometimes the key turns ON ok, but mostly it's a real burger! Real struggle to turn it on, really stiff and sometimes I struggle for a minute before I get the magic green light up. Tried WD40, does not appear to have improved it at all. Any suggestions before I have to strip half the front end down to replace it?

Are you sure you're using the right key ?

I bought the bike last November from a Yamaha Main Dealer. I'm using the 3 keys he provided.

Debs had the same trouble on her 2000 D6 and Chell has problems on her Fazer.
Think it's to do with carp getting down the key slot and wearing on the levers.
Looks like it's a case of "they all do that"

try spraying down the slot with silicon spray, work the key lots of times to get it well worked in

Yeah I've been trying the WD40 but I need a new can with the small tube that comes with it. Then I can get the oil right into the switch. Then I'll let it soak in and try working the lock, as you suggest really. I'll buy a new can tomorrow.. I have looked in the Haynes Manual to see what is involved in replacing a switch! Remove fairing, handle-bars, top yoke.....aggro! But I may have to go that route if the magic duck oil does'nt work.

wd40 is not very good for the switch, silicon spray is better, you'll probably find that it can still be difficult sometimes, but tbh iv had a few yamahas with the same problems and using the silicon has been the best, but it does take a bit of time to get better ;D

Will Pledge polish do the job? (silicon based)
Least it will be shiney if it doesn't work ;D

I sprayed wd40 into my sticky switch and it seemed to do the job,but the RAC man told me it would be better to smear some light grease on the key and turn it on and off a number of times to grease the moving parts of the lock.

From my experience of locks (& locksmiths!) grease is the wrong thing to put into a lock. It works at first, but after a time hardens and makes the lock stiff which is where I am now!
I'll take the tip regarding the silicon spray and will get some today.
;D ;D

I think I have sorted the reluctant ignition switch. I judged that it was really gummed up inside, so squirted a load of carb cleaner (ether based from the smell!) into the lock. Did this about 4 times, then used a very light oil. Found a can of push-bike oil for cables in the shed and used that a few times and it seems to have done the trick. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the feedback.

Hi Eliminator
Yes it is. Since the treatment detailed above I have not had a problem with it.
Re-reading this thread has reminded me how bad it was.
I'll give it some more light oil tomorrow!
If you have the same problem then you have to keep dosing it, as stated I used spirit based carb cleaner to clear the muck out, then a light oil sold by cycle shops for cables.
Place a rag on the front mudguard as it will drain right through the lock. Then when it is freed up use the light oil.
Good luck. I know how annoying it can be.
