I'm thinking about getting my swingarm powder coated. I'm a bit worried about the pivot bearings ie how I could protect them from the coating. Anyone else done this or recommend a suitable paint instead? Hammerite any good? (when I've used hammerite in the past I've been a bit disappointed) Thanks

Hugh,
Had my D6 swingarm powder coated and it come back lovely, well worth doing. But I (well my bro) used a long nut and bolt with washers (or use a small piece of metal plate cut and drilled) to mask off the bearings.
Came back perfect.

Silver smootherite is the cheap option.

Thanks Beeblemaster - great idea. I could use some threaded rod cut to size and screw some nuts and penny washers each end.
Just rang to get a quote for the powder coating £20 ish (RNR coatings in Ripon) for a the arm to be shot blasted and powder coated sounds like a bargain.
Cheers Hugh

Powder coating is remarkably cheap for the finish you get. Depends how cheap you want to be and how much hassle you want. For a fiver you can go get some hammerite, it'll hide the rust and look OKish. It will save you the risk that you have to change the bearings due to the grease boiling out. OTOH, if you open it up and the bearings are notchy anyway, just crack on and do the whole job.

I certainly wouldn't bother Hammeriting when you can get it coated for that. I took mine here: www.powder-coatings.ltd.uk/motor.phpThey did all the metalwork on my CX, Swingarm and brake arm on my Divvy, engine bars on my TDM, can't fault at all. Got to take centre stands in next time as they're looking manky and someone's dumped a D9 swingarm on me to get done

I had my centre stand and bottom triple clamp done at CJ Ward in Burton on Trent. Total £15. They also did my Suzuki rear wheel hub in silver for £12.
Hammerite/Smoothrite is ok on new metal, but rust will come through again and those paints chip very easily. I'd powder coat every time.
It's worth cleaning up the little nooks and crannies yourself and asking the coaters to pay special attention to those bits. Recoating over an old powder finish is a PIA.
Fab idea for covering the wheel bearings, do check they dont have integral seals as they wont cope with the stoving oven.
