A friend has the above bike with an intermittent fault. The starter will spin by itself, without the key being in the ignition Any ideas people?

Had something similar in an old car, starter would cut in while driving along, turned out to be arcing across ignition switch contacts due to copper 'dust'.

Tell him to get the battery checked.
The starter motor is fired up by the way of a relay and if the battery isn`t to healthy the relay opens and the battery feeds the starter but dosn`t have enough power left over for the bike to close the relay once you take thumb of the button. Hence the starter carries on spinning even if you take the key out.
If the battery gets any worse it can then burn out the ignition module as even more relays open and can`t close due to lack of power.

It's a standard K-series problem. This has been cut and pasted from the FAQs section from the Motobins website:
Starting a K-Series with a flat battery can not only cause the ABS unit to register a power supply problem, but can also cause more severe problems - as the starter contactor coil will operate at reduced power, its contacts will not be held together tightly, and arcing will result. In extreme cases, the contacts can become welded together, making the starter motor run continuously - it's cheaper to buy a BMW power socket, through which you can keep the battery fully charged.
