Right I thought, swing arm off for powder coating, easy peasy, NOT!
10 hours, 3 allen keys, 2 socket allen keys, much heating, cooling, lusol, swearing, tears, you name it, it's off.
Good job I went for it though, right hand pivot bearing was knacked and had rusted on to pivot peg.
A nightmare to get off.
So moral is service it, service it, service it, especially if you keep going through winter.
Inside of swing arm casing is rusty, so after powder coating it will be sprayed with underseal type stuff.
It has to be the worst dismantling job I've done in a long time, but that's life, it could have given up on me on the next big tour.
So, lay in a good supply of good quality 6mm allen keys!
I think I was lucky enough to catch it before the bearing went completely, it was on the way out but not collapsed, left side bearing felt fine, no indication while riding the bike that there was a problem.
When I had the arm on the garage floor and turned it on it's side a load of rust fell out! Not very well painted inside.
Isn't it typical that the pivot with the 6mm socket jams when the one on the left with a 27mm hex comes out ok.
I was at the stage of looking for a power hacksaw when it threw in the towel.
btw I also found the lock nut loose on the right side pivot.
The front part of the arm is now at a local bike shop getting the bearings removed. Believe it or not I tried 3 tool hire shops and none of them had a puller kit.
Anyway, I don't have a big meaty vice to give it some good wallops.
The guy who is pulling the bearings is going to get new ones from a bearing supplier, rather than go to Yamaha, I can let anybody know price comparison if they want.
If anybody wants more in depth info on this job feel free to email me
(gordonkbickerton@hotmail.com).
I decided just to get the front part powder coated and paint the final drive as it would have been a really big and maybe pricey job to renew seals and bearings, all looked fine when I opened it up.
To get the outer race of the knackered bearing out took the bike shop till 9.30 pm.
