An easy way to replace fork caps without the risk of cross threading is to buy a cheap rubber mallet. Break the head off and using a hobby knife or the like, cut a shape into the rubber the same size & shape of the nut on top of the fork cap. Fit the cut part over the cap & you'll have a large surface to hold (the rubber) & exert pressure as you screw the cap in (easily)

Good idea. :-)
Its also MUCH easier if the top yoke fork leg clamp is loose. Even a small pressure from the clamp seems to really close up the threads.
