Interesting stuff.
I had my WP rear shock rebuilt. The guy who did it says that most shocks can be done, though the cheaper OE shocks are not worth the expense.
He drills the shock body to release the gas pressure, strips it down its a shraeder valve to the hole he drilled cleans everything replaces the seal and fills it with new oil. The valve is then used to regas the shock.
The downside with mine is he fiddled with the shims or used the wrong oil. It's now much too stiff so will have to be redone. This time by WP.
