Just bought a couple of PMR radios (Cobra MT975) for use with the kids on holiday and possibly for some bike to bike use. A mate recently did his CBT and got a 125 but after an off, is lacking confidence cornering. I was planning to use the radios when going for rides with him so I can talk him through things. I used to be a motorbike instructor so hopefully I'll be able to be of some help to him!
I've got a starcom intercom for rider to pillion comms (not currently fitted to my new bike or helmet though) and can probably order or fabricate a lead to connect that to the radio on my bike. Was thinking for my mate's use though that to cut out wind noise a throat microphone would be better than a standard one. Be good if he could talk back instead of just listening! Seen them on eBay for the Cobra radios for under £20. The radios are compatible with PTT or VOX.
Anyone got any experience here? Cheers, Pete.

Maplin used to do a PTT kit allegedly compatible with Cobra radios.

I think throat mics would 'open' all to often, just by the wind noise, engine noise.. most radio users have mics built into helmets, and opt for PTT, the vox systems seem to go off again on wind noise.
If you want something simple, just to talk to your mate, just a radio and ear piece for him, would do, could be ok as he wouldn't be able to answer you back! hth

From what I've looked into, throat mics are chosen where there is a lot of background noise as they don't pick up the wind noise, working on vibration of your throat instead of sounds. Just wondered if anyone had used them on bikes before. We've done a few thousand miles using our starcom system set up on VOX. It does take some tweaking to prevent it kicking in with wind noise but it can be made to work. If all else fails you are right though, give him an earpiece and that'll be it!

I remember posting about one years back..... a quick look back down the threads lead me to this diversionclub.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=commsgadgetsgps&action=display&thread=2424The Cool-Talk url no longer works, but there are retailers that still stock them on the web. I've not used them on a bike before, but have used them. They can leave you sounding a bit like a Dalek sometimes. Some can find them uncomfortable to wear and the headset is only as good as the earphones it comes with. You really need the inner-ear gel style headsets that double as earplugs, else receiving can be as troublesome as transmitting.

Cheers, that's the sort of information and experiences I'm looking for.

We went through a big phase of two way radios on runs a few years back, I think most (including me) decided they were more hassle than they were worth.
There is a place for them when just a couple of bikes, I used the Maplins set with a PTT button with a fair amount of success on a one to one basis.
