Have you adjusted or replaced the clutch cable?

Start by checking the clutch cable, lever pivot (they wear and give odd feeling), sprocket carrier bearing, gear pedal freeness and adjustment, and chain. Cable - renew. You can pour WD40 down there but it's only a temporary fix. Lever pivot - replace for Honda type from Revere. You will need to put two spade plugs on and may need to have the thread re-cut at an engineering shop. Bigger pivot, better feeling. Bearing - check like a wheel bearing by grabbing the sprocket at 6 and 12 o'clock and twisting. Easy to replace if no good. Chain - check, adjust, lube, maybe replace. If that's not it then look at the clutch itself. Maybe the release bearing is going? I did actually have to replace the friction plates on mine at "only" about 40k miles so it is possible that it's just the plates. I had a problem with buying the springs, as Fowlers sent me the wrong ones but reckoned that they were the ones listed on the fiche. I recommend you to get a gasket in stock, remove the cover, check everything over with a vernier, refit the cover with silicon grease smeared on the gasket so you can open it next weekend, and go order parts only once you know what wants replacing. Or you could buy everything first only to find the springs and bearing were OK

Hi tyer0667
I have a 95 xj600n and I also had problems with my clutch and after trying renewing the cable I was still having problems, so I put the bike to a mechanic who found the the problem was the thrust bearing had worn down, he replaced it and the clutch was fixed. Apparently this is a common problem, but keeping your oil level to nearly to the top of the oil viewing window helps lubricating the clutch, as it normally only gets splashes of oil.
The clutch thrust bearing is very easy to replace and only costs about £6 plus fresh oil.
